GWEN MCNENNEY - TRANSFORMATIONAL FINE ARTIST

STATEMENT

My work has largely been based on spontaneous, spiritual, straightforward reaction to the visual - whether it be an arresting face, captivating landscape, interesting architecture, or visionary imagery.  While there is no specific criteria for an "inspiration", I have been consistently influenced by Spanish Colonial, South American Andean,Caribbean, African, Native American, and Southwestern U.S. cultures, architecture, landscapes, and, more recently, imagery from my spiritual path - working to express my reactions mainly through the use of multimedia: watercolor, pen and ink, colored and lead pencil, oil, pastel -- and my latest love, acrylics, metalic pens, and glitter.   Through the combination of inspiration, composition, and color, it is my intention that my work serve as a loving vehicle for transformation and joy on all levels.

ARTIST’S SUBJECT STATEMENT

FOR

 MOOD IN PINK AND BLUE

Since I, Gwen McNenney, am the subject of this work, this is a combined statement.  Mood in Pink and Blue was produced in a spontaneous class/studio, self portrait session.  We were to exaggerate our features in a loose interpretation of Picasso.  While it doesn’t really (happily!) look like me, there is a certain essence of what I was feeling and portraying that day that is definitely recognizable.  One can see vulnerability, wistfulness bordering, perhaps on sadness, and maybe other things as well.  You may pick up on feelings I wasn’t consciously aware of!  In any case, It was certainly an interesting session for me.

The use of strong lines and colors is a particular vehicle I’m partial to for getting my points across in many of my pieces.  This particular piece is a case in point.
